The bible is a powerful book. When I start my day, I remind myself to lay my worries before God. Through good times and difficult times, I always have concerns. I pray the Holy Spirit will tell me what I should know today, and I read the bible.
The bible is the living word of God. The gospel is not just words. When you read the bible, the Holy Spirit can fill you up. The Holy Spirit can guide you to understand the words. Verses that didn’t make sense, will become clear. The Holy Spirit will reveal meanings for our lives and give us assurance. The power of the Holy Spirit is available to us, when we read God’s written words in the bible.
For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance
–1 Thessalonians 1:5 (NKJV)
I often see on social media arguments about the bible. People say that it doesn’t make sense, and its out of date. I used to think these thoughts too. Now, I know better.
Before you open the bible, pray. Ask God to give you understanding. Ask God to show you what you need to know to do his will today. For me, it started out small. I would get an insight that I would ponder and reflect on. Have you ever heard that saying ‘the more you read, the more you know’? That was true for me. The more that I read the bible, the more verses make sense.
Bible study leaders explain that verses will pop out at you. Underline those verses. I have heard many people say, that they read the same passages and get a new meaning each time. I find this true for myself.
When I read the bible, the power of the Holy Spirit is present. I feel peace and comfort that stays within me throughout the day. I receive insights on how to live my life. Its like I am getting advice from God on how to go about my day. I need the guidance. I want the guidance. I cling to the feelings of peace and comfort.
The word of God works in those who believe. Once I realized how powerful the words in the bible are, I realized how much there is to thankful for in my life. The words of God are truth. There are unseen resources in the heavenly places, available to us, if we seek God through prayer and reading the bible.
For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.
–1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NKJV)
I thank God for giving us the bible. I thank God for drawing me to a church that reads the bible from cover to cover. I thank God for showing me the truth and the power of the bible. The gospel is not just words. There is power available to those who read the words as truth.
