Hope and Peace, Psalm

Lift Me Out of This Slimy Pit

I went to bed too late last night, and I woke up to a rainy, cold morning. I woke my kids up, helped them get ready and walked them to the bus stop. I don’t know if it was the chilly damp morning or not enough sleep, but I felt like crawling back into bed and sleeping. So, instead of exercising and reading the bible, I crawled into bed. Today, I feel unmotivated. I opened the bible, because the best cure for everything is seeking the word of the Lord to uplift me.

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.
I waited patiently for the Lord;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord
and put their trust in him.
–Psalm 40:1-3 (NIV)

I have to be patient and wait for the Lord. He will hear my cry and lift me out of this slimy pit. The Lord lifts me up when I am feeling down. The Lord is the only way to find peace in my heart and mind. I love the language ‘slimy pit’. Sometimes, I feel like I am in a slimy pit, stuck in goo that I cannot break free of, no matter how hard I try to climb and move up, the goo keeps me stuck in the pit. The other imagery is “mud and mire”. Once I am feeling down, it does feel like I am stuck in swampy, muddy ground. Every time, I struggle to lift myself up, I sink a little deeper, and sink lower, feeling more down. The more I try myself, the more that I sink. The Lord can lift me up, if I seek him and call to him. The Lord will give me a firm place to stand. The Lord can put me on a sturdy rock, where I can stand without fear of sinking. The Lord not only lifts me up and puts me on a firm foundation, then he will fill my heart with song, a hymn to praise the Lord. The Lord will lift me up from a low place, and place me on solid ground, until I am singing with praise. Everyone has the opportunity to call on the Lord to lift them up. We all need the Lord. I do, and I call on the Lord often. He answers. Try it now. Read the scripture verses and wholeheartedly seek the Lord to help you, and see how your heart gets filled with peace and love, while your weariness fades away.
