Have you ever been in a situation where somebody is trying to make you look bad and you have no idea why? Sometimes, we are faced with these situations where people do not want us to succeed. Even in the bible, King David went through a difficult time when he pleads with God for justice against those who are trying to destroy him. When people plot against you silently, it can sometimes shock us. We had no idea that they were plotting behind our backs and smiling at us, when they faced us. In Psalm 35, David asks God to fight those who fight him. David asks God to take up his shield and armor and come to his aid. When others have been planning against us, it can be so stressful, we feel like there is no way out of the situation. There is always a way out. We have to pray to God to defend us and take care of the situation.
Contend, Lord, with those who contend with me;
fight against those who fight against me.
Take up shield and armor;
arise and come to my aid.
–Psalm 35:1-2 (NIV)
In Psalm 35, it sounds like David was being set-up for something he didn’t do. They set-up a net to trap him, for no reason. They dug a pit for him to fall into. David sounds hurt and angry. He asks God to ruin those who tried to trap him. He asks God to turn the situation around, asking that the net they tried to entangle him in, instead be used to entangle them. He said he will rejoice in the Lord for rescuing the poor from those who rob them.
Since they hid their net for me without cause
and without cause dug a pit for me,
may ruin overtake them by surprise—
may the net they hid entangle them,
may they fall into the pit, to their ruin.
Then my soul will rejoice in the Lord
and delight in his salvation.
My whole being will exclaim,
“Who is like you, Lord?
You rescue the poor from those too strong for them,
the poor and needy from those who rob them.”
–Psalm 35:7-10 (NIV)
When I used to be part of the work force, I faced these situations periodically. People could be ruthless. I would deal with it all myself. I would get so stressed out and worn down. I wasn’t meant to deal with all of that on my own. God wants us to call to him in times of trouble and ask for help. In these situations, sometimes we are not strong enough and don’t know who to trust. We can always trust in God, who is our light and strength. Stop trying to do everything on your own and pray to God to help you turn the situation around and help you. God is waiting to hear your prayers and help you.
