My daughter has been sick with the flu for almost a week. She woke up this morning, and her fever is gone. She is smiling and full of smiles and energy. Wow, what a difference a few days make. When she was sick, she had a grumpy face, her shoulders were hunched as she leaned against me and told me that she didn’t feel good. I was concerned and sought a way to make her feel better. I took her temperature, and seeing that it was too high, I immediately called the doctor and made an appointment. As a mom, I wanted to make my child feel better again soon. It makes me hurt inside, when my kids don’t feel well. God feels the same way about us. God does not want us to hurt. God wants to comfort us.
God is endless and timeless. God created the world, so he has been around since the beginning of time as we know it. And, how much do we really know? We know what we can see and touch. We know as far back as we can find fossils to mark time. God created time and space. In the spectrum of time, we are a tiny speck. Our lives are important and created by the Lord, yet are only a mark of time in history.
You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,
even those who seem secure.
–Psalm 39:5 (NIV)
The days of our life are a mere handbreadth. The meaning of handbreadth is a linear measurement approximating the width of the palm of the hands. Before the Lord, our lives are the measurement of the palm of our hand in a vast universe. Everyone’s life is the same, even those who seem secure. When we see those people who have their lives all together and seem to have it all, remember that we are all the same to the Lord.
“But now, Lord, what do I look for?
My hope is in you.
Save me from all my transgressions;
do not make me the scorn of fools.
–Psalm 39:7-8 (NIV)
So, how do we find happiness in life? What do we look for? My hope is in the Lord. I ask the Lord to save me from my offenses. I pray that the Lord does not let the unwise mock me and make me feel worthless. God will not let fools mock us. God will protect us and strengthen us. My hope is in the Lord.
Prayer
Dear God,
You are endless in your existence and love for me. Forgive me for all my offenses against you. Lord, my hope is in you. Save me from my wrongs. Do not let fools mock me and sneer at me. God, fill me with the Holy Spirit, protect me from my enemies and watch over me.
Amen
