Choosing Faith Each Day

Choose God, Not Society

We had company visiting over the weekend, and we were watching a late night talk show. I do not usually stay up late enough to watch them anymore. One of the talk show hosts made a joke that he made a decision to accept the Lord, Jesus Christ as his Savior. I cringed inside, as the audience laughed. When did society reach the point of laughing at those who believe in Jesus? Or, laughing at the thought of Christianity? It is sad, but it is a statement about our current society. God will deal with us, according to our conduct. God will judge us by the standards we chose to live by, and we will know that God is the Lord.

I will deal with them according to their conduct,
and by their own standards I will judge them.
“‘Then they will know that I am the Lord.’”
–Ezekiel 7:27 (NIV)

It is going to be hard to be a believer, when you are living in the world. We can surround ourselves with other church going people. The world is full of a majority of people, that no longer believe in Jesus and God. They have found other things to occupy their time that doesn’t make them feel uncomfortable, because everything goes. Eventually, we have to send our kids out there into society, where everything goes. Everything is justified. Everybody is so ‘tolerant’ of others. Are they also tolerant of Christians who practice their faith? The news stories that I read, seem to say that you can only be tolerant of some beliefs, not all.

Which way will my children go? Will they choose God or society? It is difficult to go against society and choose God. Based on experience, it is even more difficult to follow society over God. Follow God and you will find peace. Follow society, and you will feel empty. You will search and search for that key to happiness. Money. Success. Friends. The latest fashion. A trim, sleek physique. At the end of the day, you will still be missing something. When you follow God, you feel whole. Complete. Loved. Valued. When you follow God, you may lack material things, but you won’t care, because God gives us what we need to feel valued.

How can we make our kids follow God and not society? We cannot, but God can. We can read the bible with our kids. We can pray with them. We can pray for them. We can set an example of following God over society. Know what? God can do the rest. God will take care of everything. The world can laugh at people who believe in Jesus, but they won’t be laughing when they are standing in the Lord’s presence. Choose God, not society.
