This morning, I opened up my bible to Daniel. There was a dramatic situation, where the king wanted his dream interpreted. King Nebuchadnezzar summoned “the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers to tell him what he had dreamed.” They could not interpret his dream, and the king became angry and sentenced all the wise men to death. This death sentence included Daniel, who asked for a chance to interpret the dream.
So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers to tell him what he had dreamed. When they came in and stood before the king, he said to them, “I have had a dream that troubles me and I want to know what it means.”
–Daniel 2:2-3 New International Version (NIV)
Daniel did not rely on his own understanding. He went back home and asked his friends to pray with him. Daniel and his three friends prayed to God to understand the meaning of King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. They prayed that God would reveal the dream meaning, in hopes of saving their lives, as well as all the wise men of Babylon.
During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven and said:
“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;
wisdom and power are his.
He changes times and seasons;
he deposes kings and raises up others.
He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to the discerning.
He reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what lies in darkness,
and light dwells with him.
I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors:
You have given me wisdom and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you,
you have made known to us the dream of the king.”
–Daniel 2:19-23 (NIV)
God did reveal the meaning of the dream to Daniel. During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Daniel Praised God and said a prayer. Daniel said that God’s name should be praised forever. Daniel acknowledged that God has all the wisdom and power. God controls time, changing times and seasons. God deposes of kings and raises up others to be kings. God provides wisdom to the wise, knowledge and discernment. God reveals deep and hidden things. God knows what lies in the darkness. Light dwells in God. Daniel thanks and praises God for answering his prayer and revealing the mystery of the king’s dream.
Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come.”
–Daniel 2:27-28 (NIV)
God has the answers to our problems. When we pray and ask God, “he reveals deep and hidden things”. We can search all day long and never find answers. When we pray to God, we can learn “deep and hidden things”. I love how this phrase is so mysterious and profound. I tend to make life complicated, by thinking that I have to find answers on my own. I really just need to pray. God can provide answers for me. No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can reveal mysteries. God can reveal mysteries to us. All those questions bothering you? You could be a prayer away from receiving an answer.
