We have the freedom of choice. God let us fulfill the scriptures by crucifying his only son. What makes us so determined to do our own will? Do we think that we can manifest what we want into existence, with sheer determination and force?
Jesus died on the cross for us. People mocked him. They humiliated him. They thought they had won.
God was not done. The earth quaked. Rocks split. Graves opened, spirits of saints were raised and appeared to many. The guards in front of tomb exclaimed, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
—Matthew 27:50-54 (NKJV)
Pilate told the guards to block the tomb of Jesus with the most secure rock to seal the tomb. Again, people tried to get their way. As if any of us can block or seal off the power of the Lord.
Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how.” So they went and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone and setting the guard.
—Matthew 27:65-66 (NKJV)
The earth quaked. An angel of the Lord descended from heaven and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His impenetrable eyes looked like lightning. His cloths were white as snow. The guard shook in fear and looked like dead men. Friends and family of Jesus walked up to the tomb looking for Jesus, when they saw the angel. The angel said, “He is not here; for He is risen”.
And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men. But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.”
—Matthew 28:2-7 (NKJV)
They tried to kill Jesus. They tried to seal the tomb. God is bigger than death. God raised Jesus from the dead to forgive our sins. The earth shook. Even the guards declared that Jesus was the Son of Man.
God is so good. We do our worst, and God gave us his only son to forgive our sins. No matter what you have done, go to God and ask for forgiveness. God is a loving and compassionate. God forgives.
We can try and will our wants into existence. We can use sheer force and determination. We can try to bulldoze over everything to get our way. If God does not want it, forget it. We can spin our wheels and not move. Why do we do this? Stop. Pray. Ask God to show us his good will, which is a million times better than anything that we can imagine. God’s will reigns.
