Sometimes we have to face uncomfortable topics. We live in a fallen world, and there are evil people in the world. Sadly, there are people in the world that want to harm you. There are divisive people.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines divisive as creating disunity or dissension. Have you ever met anyone like that? Someone that stirs up trouble for her own gain? I know someone that will tell you how people have wronged her and leave out her role in the story. She weaves her tales so well, that you start to dislike the people that she talks about and feel angry towards them. Then you realize, she is doing the same thing to you, behind your back. She is selecting words out of context and trying to destroy your life. A person like this can ruin lives, for her own gain.
The bible clearly says to stay away from divisive people.
Avoid Divisive Persons
Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple. For your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil. And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
–Romans 16:17-2
Divisive people can view good hearted, innocent people as simple or not smart. They want to use you for their gain. They want to take advantage of your goodness and deceive you with smooth words and flattering speech. Paul wants us to be wise about what is good and simple about what is evil. Paul was warning us about divisive people.
What if there is a divisive person close to you? Pray for them. Pray that they find Jesus in their hearts, but follow Paul’s advice and stay away from them. Simply stated, this person is evil and will ruin your life.
Evil is evil, and we don’t need to learn about it. We want to serve Jesus Christ. We want our obedience to God to shine through in our good works. The God of peace will crush Satan under your feet. When we stay away from evil, God takes care of us.
