When you are going through a stormy period in your life, you just want it to end. Right now. I am in the midst of a storm. My husband’s contract ended at the end of July, so he doesn’t have a job. Right now we are still hanging in there. How long before the storms start causing damage? Bad storms destroy properties and neighborhoods.
Yesterday, I could not make sense of anything that I read in the bible. Sometimes, it is best to sleep and try again later. Today, I read Luke 8. There are several parables, stories that help us understand how to live and believe. The one that spoke to me today was about Jesus calming the storm. Jesus and his disciples got in a boat, with a plan to sail across the lake. Jesus fell asleep right before a storm came down on the lake. The disciples woke up Jesus, and He asked “where is your faith?” Jesus rebuked the wind and waves and all was calm. The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!”
Right now, some days I feel like I am drowning. I don’t know when the right job opportunity will be found. It is scary to face the unknown. We are calmly and faithfully praying to God for a new job. Will it be when we are drowning that a miracle happens? Even though we feel confused and on the verge of panicking, God knows our future. God won’t let us drown. When you are on a sinking boat, it tests your faith. And maybe that is the point. Can we be faithful during the storm? Even the disciples were afraid, and Jesus was next to them. Isn’t Jesus next to us too?
When you are going through the storm, have faith. Jesus can calm the storm. Even the winds and waves obey him.
Jesus Calms the Storm
One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and started out. As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger.
The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!”
When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm. Then he asked them, “Where is your faith?”
The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!”
