God's Character

The Weak Call On God’s Strength

The official first day of Spring is in one week. I love Spring. I love the flowers blooming and leaves growing on the trees. The one thing that I always forget comes with Spring, seasonal allergies. I have been knocked out the past few days. I think I had a cold and forgot to take my allergy medicine, so the combination has led me to feeling lousy this week. Feeling under the weather makes me feel vulnerable. I want to do all these things, but I keep falling asleep. It makes me feel weak. It also makes me appreciate my health. Usually, I feel good each day. Sometimes, you have to be weak to call on God’s strength. God can help me, but I didn’t ask. Just like I forget how bad my seasonal allergies hit me each Spring and Fall, I sometimes forget to call out to God for help. I am so weighed down with what I am feeling, that I don’t ask God to help me.

Even when I feel down and like nothing can help me, God can. God created the heavens and earth. God knows the place where lightning is sent out. God knows the place where the east winds scatter over the earth. The things that I think are out of my control are the things that God created and controls.

What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed,
or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth?
–Job 38:24 (NIV)

It is so easy to get caught up in everyday life and weighed down by what we see and feel. I see my children misbehaving. I feel my head throbbing from seasonal allergies. At first, I don’t see the opportunity to correct these things. I just see things not going the way that I want them to go. God is reminding me that I need to work on some stuff.

Who made the heavens and the sky? God did. The night sky fascinates so many people. We are amazed to see a shooting star in the sky. The night sky is a good reminder that God created all the complex, unknown things in the universe. Can we bind the chains of the Pleiades? The Pleiades is an open star cluster, visible in the night sky. Do we think that we can bind the star cluster or control it? It is not something that humans would fathom as possible. Yet, God can do it. Can we loosen Orion’s belt? Orion is a constellation located on the celestial equator and visible throughout the world. It is one of the most recognizable constellations in the night sky. It was named after Orion, a hunter in Greek mythology. I have never thought that humans could touch the sky, mush less loosen its belt. Its such an interesting comparison. Humans named the star constellation after a false god in Greek mythology. Our God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,  created this complex universe full of planets and stars, and people created a false god to explain its origins. God must have been furious. When we don’t know something and rely on our own very limited knowledge, we forget that we should be praying to God for wisdom.

“Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades?
Can you loosen Orion’s belt?
Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons
or lead out the Bear with its cubs?
Do you know the laws of the heavens?
Can you set up God’s dominion over the earth?
–Job 38:31-33 (NIV)

Can we bring forth the constellations in their seasons? God can. We can see different constellations, based on the season. God is changing the seasons, visible in the sky and also on earth, when the bear and his cubs come out of hibernation. Isn’t that amazing? I can picture God making constellations visible with a swish of his hand. “Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God’s dominion over the earth?” Sometimes, I need a reminder of how God is the ruler of heaven and earth. I just accept the seasons and stars in the sky, not always appreciating how amazing they are. God is even more amazing for creating them. Daily, I get bogged down by feelings. When I am feeling weak, that is the time to call out to God to strengthen me.

Prayer

Dear God,

You bring forth the constellations in their seasons. I pray that you help me in my current season. God, help me keep my eyes focused on you. Praying that you make me feel whole physically and emotionally, so I can focus my time on praising you. I am weak, I call out to you to give me strength

Amen
