Love and Praise, Paul

Knowledge Puffs Up, But Love Edifies

We all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up. I know some obnoxious people who think that they know everything. It can be painful to be around these people. It feels like a constant lecture, and it can be, well, boring. Instead, of impressing us with their knowledge, its irritating and condescending. After spending time with these people, I feel annoyed.

Love edifies. Love uplifts us. Love builds us up. It can be harder to be kind to someone who is not being nice to you. It is easy when someone is not nice to say, he doesn’t know anything anyway. We say this just to build ourselves up. When we have a loving response to an unkind person, we are doing God’s will. We let go of ourselves. Love makes us feel good and may change the other person too.

If we ever feel like we know so much and congratulate ourselves for being so smart, it is time for a reality check. God knows everything, and we need to remind ourselves that we don’t know anything compared to God.

We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know.
–1 Corinthians 8:1-2 (NKJV)

Thinking too much of yourself can be destructive. Arrogance tears down relationships. Love will build us and those around us up. Love prospers.
